Nyxie Tip:

Hi there, let me introduce myself... my name is Nyxie, and I'll be sharing sewing tips with you.

Perhaps it seems a bit ridiculous for a me, since I have no opposable thumbs, to be giving sewing tips, but my person promised me I could have a little spot on
You Are Sew Special! as long as it's relevant.

Well, as you know, it's in the nature of a cat not to be left out, so here goes... I hope you find my tip helpful....

How to Make a Flat-Felled Seam

To sew a flat-felled seam, first put the RIGHT sides of the fabric together (with WRONG sides of the fabric facing out) and pin along the seam. Baste along seam, removing pins.

Stitch along your seam allowance its entire length. Be sure to back up a few stitches at the beginning and the end of the seam to keep the stitching from coming undone.

Now, trim only ONE of the lengths of the seam allowance to 1/4" wide.

On the WRONG side of the fabric, press the seam flat towards the seam allowance you just trimmed (so that the 1/4” seam allowance is under the 5/8” seam allowance).

Then turn the fabric to the RIGHT side and press again, so that the seam is very flat on both sides of your project.

Then take the 5/8” seam allowance and fold it under the whole length of the seam, wrapping the fold around the 1/4” seam allowance, and pinning your very neat fold as you go.

Baste this fold through all layers of fabric, and then press the fold, making sure it is beautifully even all the way.
